Peppermint is one such essential oil that always lies in my cupboard. It’s my personal favorite. It’s like there is nothing that peppermint essential oil can’t solve. I also carry this oil with me when i am travelling.

Peppermint essential oil is one of the most potent essential oil that is used to treat various hair and scalp problems. This oil has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. It soothes an itchy scalp and helps to absorb excess oils on the scalp. It soothes an itchy scalp, keeps dandruff at bay and defends against head lice too.

Peppermint leaves contain several essential oils including menthol, menthone and limonene. Menthol gives peppermint its cooling properties and recognizably minty scent and this is what responsible to give your scalp a refreshing and cooling sensation when applied.

1. Hair rinse:

One of the effortless hair care routine that you follow is doing hair rinses at least occasionally if not so often. Hair rinse actually work and have many miraculous benefits apart from adding shine and softness to your hair.

Hair rinse is nothing but a final rinse that is usually done to the hair immediately after shampooing and conditioning, but before styling. Hair rinses are a foolproof way to take care of your hair.

Natural hair rinses are the best way to give your hair a break from chemical loaded products. These hair rinses effectively rinses out all the product buildup on scalp and controls the oil production. It maintains the right balance of oils on your scalp without actually drying.

To use: Choose any hair rinse of your choice from the above link and add 5-6 drops of essential oil of your choice to 3000ml of water and mix well. Use this as a final rinse after you wash your hair.

2. In Shampoo: 

Adding few drops of essential oils to your shampoo while washing your hair is one the best ways to get the most out of the therapeutic benefits of essential  oils.

But, there is a rule of thumb to follow while using essential oils either in skin care or hair care.

As essential oils are highly concentrated oils of plants and herbs, there oils should and must be diluted before using. Now to use,

-Take one tablespoon full of which ever shampoo you are using into your palm, but it is best to use herbal, mild or organic shampoo with minimal ingredients. Avoid using harmful chemicals as much as your can.

– Now add not more than 2 drops of essential oils (as per your scalp’s/hair’s type/problem) that I mentioned above.

-Mix them both using both of your palms and apply to your hair and massage gently for 3-4 minutes.

-Cleanse your hair well and wash off with normal water. 

-Follow up with a conditioner.

You can add few drops of any essential oils of your choice to the conditioner as well. But I prefer to use them with only shampoos, as I can work up the essential oils on to my scalp for maximum benefits.

3. Hair Oils:

Adding few drops of essential oils in your hair oils will not only benefit your scalp and hair but also relive you from stress and anxiety (few essential oils).

To use essential oils in your hair oils to treat flaky dandruff and itchiness especially in winters, mix 6 drops any essential oil of your choice from the above list with 30ml of virgin coconut oil.

Now part your hair into small sections and apply this oil to your scalp covering all parts of your scalp. Massage your scalp for 5 minutes and tie your hair up in a bun.

Leave it overnight and wash it off the next morning with mild shampoo and condition as usual.

You can do this oil treatments twice a week to see visible reduction of flaky dandruff on your scalp.

4. Hair Masks:

    I have extreme hair loss for decades and my knee length hair is reduced to rat tail, leaving the scalp visible inspire of prolong treatments by dermatologists.

      I am so sorry to hear this. By hearing your concern, I can definitely say that your hair loss is not normal. I don’t know if the dermatologists you consulted were really concerned to know about the reason behind your hair loss or not, because just my having few scalp sessions, pills and hair products that the brands ask these doctors to recommend to their patients..may not help. I am not talking about all, but yeah..most of them. This is a business now.
      Just please understand that hair loss is mostly caused due to the internal changes in your body. It could be any reason, hormonal changes, vitamin defeciences, thyroid disorders, PCOS, skin conditions like psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis, or may be anything that we even dont know about. I am not trying to scare you away, but want you to know that it is essential to know about your body more before jumping into some temporary solutions.
      First, get checked for any vitamin defeciences, pcos or thyroid disorders. These are the most common reasons people face hair loss issues for years. short, please find out the reason. There should be something which went wrong and caused you this hair loss problem.
      And in the meantime, dont lose your self esteem. Good luck..!
